Not sure. Do you know if they have an open (for a change) API? Something not just for apps?

I have been running Apple Homekit since last year and it runs fine. Using a raspberry with the homekit bridge running a http interface which sets and gets values using the same manner as done with the Echo bridge.
Probably not an answer to your question but it shows it can be done. I use it as an extention to my setup for just a very few features. One of them is a sort of coming home action. I use Siri when coming close to my house to call for the home coming macro.
