wifi pocketpc software remotes, what's everybody using?

Post by solid_snake »

hey guys, i was just wondering what pda's you use for housebot wifi pocketpc software remotes (brand, model) and if there were any good deals out there. i have been looking at the audiovox pda-1032c (i think scott has this one) and the hp ipaq 2215. as a secondary purpose i would also like to use it ocasionally for gps and maybe even for its intended purpose as a pda.

You're right. I do use an AudioVox Maestro PPC. I'm not sure if they still sell that model, but it's been a great device.

The Dell models also make a good cost effective solution.

You might want to be careful if you get any of the newer platforms that are based on .net. The Software Remotes haven't been built for .net.

See now you spoiled all my fun. I've been waiting for the nep ipaqs to come out specificly the HP iPAQ hx4705 Pocket PC. It has a touchpad for the arrow keys that can be used easily with one hand. Great for a remote. Especially when controling meedio.

I really haven't kept up with each new release. In the past, the OS changes were so minor and did not effect the applications. I've only heard that there are some issues running the SW Remotes on the .net platforms, but don't know what the OS platforms are that have .net and I'm not really sure of the issue. There may be a simple workaround, but I don't have a .net device to investigate :(

I don't do the planning any more, so we'll have to wait and see what the Meedio guys have in store... I don't own a copy of VC .net to test.

I'm using an Axim X5 with an Ambicom Wifi card that works well with HouseBot. I used to use a Simpad which had a nice 8.4" 800x600 display until I dropped it. The Simpad was a CE 4.x device which isn't natively supported but is able to work well with a couple of hacks.

Was the simpad fast enough to do everything you needed. I mean could it handle refreshing the graphics and cover art without a noticable delay. I've thouht about getting one of those off ebay, but never found anyone who could tell me the speed on something I would use it for.

Yes, it was plenty fast enough. The only delays I noticed were when it would transfer lots of dynamic images from the server to the client but I believe that was more due to my crappy wireless access point.

I'm using an iPaq 2215 and it works great. Although this *is* built on the .NET platform the PPC software remote works just fine with it (presumably because the iPaq is running PPC .NET). I have a larger web tablet that is running plain CE .NET and haven't been able to get any software remote to work on it.

What's the model of the tablet that you can't get it to work on?

It's the Geode-based WebDT 380 that I mentioned in another post. Fortunately I have the Viewpad also :-)

I'm not real strong on C++ (I'm mainly a VB and SQL developer) *but* I do have Visual Studio .NET 2003. As such if I can be of any help in testing on CE.NET I'll be happy to do what I can (you had mentioned that you can't test .NET so I thought I would offer).

I think what needs to be done is to build the Software Remote as a .net application. I'm not sure what that buys it. Will it run on all .net platforms even the CE/Mobile/PPC hardware? I have no idea.

The Software Remotes all share the same code (as well as the Theme designer in HouseBot) with very minor differences between platforms. My fear is that the .net will require more significant changes, although I could be totally wrong.

I've not yet drank the .net Kool-Aid. I have my cup in hand, but just can't bring it to my lips with free will. I suppose it's just a matter of time, but the future lies with development planning within Meedio... not me.

hey dlmorgan999, that's the ppc that i am now looking at because of the built in bluetooth and dual expansion slots. did you have any problems getting housebot to work? (it doesn't sound like you did) if you don't mind saying, how much did you pay for the 2215 and have you had any problems out of it? thanks.

Jason,

It was quite easy to get the software remote working on my 2215 (basically just copy the program over and run it). I don't remember for sure how much I paid but I think it was around $400. It's worked great for me with no problems.

HP4150 here. Works fantastic with the internal 802.11b No need to buy a card and have a stubby antenna sticking out.
